IELTS Speaking Module

The IELTS Speaking Module is designed to assess your ability to communicate in English through a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. The test lasts 11–14 minutes and is the same for both Academic and General Training IELTS.

This section evaluates how well you can express ideas, use appropriate vocabulary, maintain fluency, and pronounce words clearly in everyday conversations.

Format of the Speaking Test

The test is divided into three parts:

Part 1 – Introduction & Interview (4–5 minutes)

  • The examiner introduces themselves and asks you basic questions about familiar topics.

  • Typical themes include:

    • Family

    • Hobbies

    • Work or studies

    • Daily routine

    • Likes and dislikes

  • Purpose: To help you feel comfortable and show your ability to speak about everyday situations.

Part 2 – Long Turn (3–4 minutes)

  • You will receive a task card (cue card) with a topic.

  • You are given 1 minute to prepare and can make notes.

  • You then speak for 1–2 minutes on the topic.

  • After your response, the examiner may ask one or two short follow-up questions.

Example topics:

  • Describe a book you recently read.

  • Talk about a memorable journey.

  • Explain a hobby you enjoy.

Part 3 – Discussion (4–5 minutes)

  • The examiner asks more complex, abstract questions related to the Part 2 topic.

  • This part tests your ability to analyze, discuss issues, and express opinions.

Example questions:

  • Why do people enjoy reading books?

  • How has technology changed the way people travel?

  • What role do hobbies play in our daily lives?

Assessment Criteria

Your performance in the Speaking Module is assessed on four equally weighted criteria:

  1. Fluency and Coherence – Ability to speak smoothly and logically, with good organization of ideas.

  2. Lexical Resource – Range and accuracy of vocabulary used.

  3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy – Correctness and variety of sentence structures.

  4. Pronunciation – Clarity, intonation, and natural rhythm of speech.

Each criterion is scored from Band 0 to Band 9, and the average gives your overall Speaking Band Score.

Tips for Success in IELTS Speaking

  • Speak naturally – avoid memorized answers.

  • Practice speaking English daily with friends, teachers, or even in front of a mirror.

  • Expand your vocabulary by reading, listening, and practicing new words.

  • Organize your thoughts clearly before answering.

  • Don’t worry about your accent – focus on clear pronunciation.

  • Use linking words (firstly, however, on the other hand, for example) to connect ideas.

  • Stay calm and confident during the test.

Remember: The IELTS Speaking test is not about “perfect English” – it’s about how effectively you can communicate. Regular practice, feedback, and confidence will help you achieve a higher band score.
